Use an X-acto knife or scissors to cut. To prevent fraying, tie a knot at the end or melt end (without burning) with a match or lighter (carefully!).
Go to these links to learn to tie some basic knots with your string. http://www.folsoms.net/knots or http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/knotlink.htm#general
To connect two ends use a double fisherman's knot.
To make a loop that does not get too tight to undo use a bowline.
To tie to a post, use a Fisherman's bend or a clove hitch.
To make a stopper in the string use a multiple overhand knot.
To secure two perpendicular posts use a transom knot.
To vary the length of the string without untieing (to tension it) use a sheepshank.
To modify you can use the following tools: X-acto knife, Scissors
You should be careful when using: Lighter or matches
You should not use: Shear, Notcher, Punch, Drill, or any other power tool.
