HDPE and Delrin have high strength and stiffness, good temperature and abrasion resistance and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Some applications include: bearings, gears, and water pump parts.
HDPE or Delrin and steel are an excellent combination for bearings. Simply drill a hole in the Delrin and a steel shaft will rotate or slide inside it easily.
To use as a press fit on a 1/4" shaft, drill to size D and use arbor press to force it on. Be careful not to use thin pieces as they might crack when forcing the press fit on.
HDPE or Delrin is the ideal material to be used on the lathe for making pulleys and shivs.
To modify you can use the following tools: Lathe, Mill, Bandsaw, Drill, Taps
You should be careful when using: Sander (go slowly, Delrin will burn if it gets too hot)
You should not use: Grinder, Shear, Notcher, Brake, Wire bender

Delrin turned to form a worm gear. Warning, this was very time consuming. |
