Setting up the HP Color LaserJet 4600dn in Windows (2000/XP)

1. Find the software for the HP4600dn in ftpguest/software/hp4600 and double-click on the setup application. Bypass all warnings against starting an executable from a network drive.

2. Click on the "HP Invent" intro screen to advance to the main menu of the installation software. Select Install Printer.

3. Acknowledge the subsequent menus for language selection, license agreement, etc.

4. Choose not to search the web for updated software (choosing yes fails on my machine).

5. Specify a printer Connected to the network.

6. Specify a Basic Microsoft Server Setup.

7. Specify a printer by address.

8. Enter the IP address for the printer: 18.80.1.236.

9. Acknowledge a Windows TCP/IP installation.

10. Choose hp color LaserJet 4600dn.

11. Choose a Typical Installation.

12. Name the printer.

13. Choose not to share the printer.

14. Print a test page if you like, but don't register the printer.

 

To enable duplex printing and set default printing to grayscale, open the list of printers from the control panel, and then open the preferences window from the menu that appears when you right-clicking on the printer name. Then select the Printing Preferences option.

Enable duplex printing by selecting Print on Both Sides from the Finishing menu.

Set default printing to grayscale by selecting Print in Grayscale from the Color menu.
