Outline of Coupling Design Process

This page presents a basic outline of the design process used for general coupling design. Each step is linked to additional pages that provide further details for the design.

Define the Problem: Determine the bounds that constrain the various parameters available in the coupling design space. Order the design parameters to place priority of those parameters which are more critical for design success.

Select Coupling Type: Determine which coupling type represents the closet match to the critical design parameters using some form of selection process. The selection process is highly qualitative due to the adaptability of each coupling type to the design requirements.

Coupling Design Analysis: A generalized design analysis procedure is presented to demonstrate the typical analyses required to design a coupling. More detailed analysis procedures are presented for the specific coupling types as well as references to case studies.

Improvement Techniques: If the mechanical design of the coupling is insufficient, further techniques can be used to improve the performance of the coupling. Techniques include assembly procedure improvements, calibration procedures, and iteration of coupling type.
