Spring 2008 Kit List
Below is a list of all the parts that will provided in your locker and the Pappalardo Lab. All other parts are provided as needed in bins in the Pappalardo Labs. The Technical Instructors are there to help you, but not make your parts. Do not hesitate to ask them about anything if you are unsure, their patience is legendary.
You have one week to check that all the parts are in your kit and see an instructor if there are any deficits. Print out the Checklist.
Notes:
These are subject to revision as clarifications are needed.
- Drawings are recommended for all parts before commencing any manufacturing operation, they may be hand sketches or CAD models as appropriate.
- You must have a drawing before using the large machines (Bridgeports, lathes, water jet, etc). Even if you think you know what you are doing, see the instructors before making your first parts.
- Stock material is limited and will not be replaced without justification of the circumstances leading to its need, i.e. demonstration of machining error and an understanding of its cause.
- As usual, students are permitted to use any fasteners, adhesives and decorative materials that they wish. A lecture will be given on joining methods and this site provides interesting sticky information.
- The provide controllers must be used, although custom electronics, such as limit switches are permitted.
- Lubrication is recommended, oil slicks are not.
- You may use any materials for non-functional decorations (make your machine look really cool).
- Failure to clean machines and surfaces after use will result in spending quality time with a dustpan and brush and the ridicule of your peers.
- Solid Models are provided of some parts, however they are not certified to be entirely accurate, e.g. materials and dimensions may differ.
- Models of the fasteners are specifically not provided , students are encouraged to use SolidWorks integrated Screw Wizards and Part Libraries.
- In addition to models, informational links are provided. These pages are old and while specifications may be out of date, the information is valid. (Sorry, we have not had time to update them fully.)
- Small parts are stocked in limited quantities; following good manufacturing practices they will be replenished in a Just in Time Manner. Hoarding is not permitted; take only what you need. Let an Instructor or UA know if there is a imminent shortage and the parts will be promptly replenished.
- All small parts are supplied from two large vendors with excellent customer service and fast shipping. Part numbers are provided. Check out their web sites:
- Be sure to read about the Motor, Gearbox and Controller immediately.
- Any kit questions should be directed to the Supreme Court.
- Do you feel that a part would contribute significantly to the competition? E-mail the court and we will consider issuing that part. Please select only McMaster parts.
